I don’t think you can see the actual rays of the sun streaming through these clouds that were the catalyst for me taking this photo, but they are there.

The first time I noticed beams of light coming thru clouds was when I was in 5th grade. That morning before I left for school, my mom told me it was Ascension Day and explained what that meant.

Later at recess I ran out of our building to a sky filled with beams of light breaking through the cloudy sky.

“Is this what it was like the day Jesus went back to heaven?” My 10-year-old self thought in awe.

The next time Ascension day hit me so powerfully was a few weeks after my mom died. The pastor read from Acts where, after Jesus was taken up before their very eyes, they were all looking intently up into the sky as He was going.

The Pastor stopped, “Why? Why would they keep gazing, searching the sky after they couldn’t see Him anymore?—Because they already missed Him—they wanted to walk and talk with Him still, to eat and drink with Him, to laugh together and cry, too—to keep working side by side.”

That day, all I could think about was, “Yes, me too, but for my mom.”

Feeling that helped me eventually see the connection between how I loved my mom and how I love Jesus.

I am thankful how her love was such a gift to me and helped me understand even more Jesus’ deep love for me too.
